OpenAI Cuts GPT-5.6 Prices as AI Competition Grows

OpenAI has reduced the prices of its GPT-5.6 model family as competition intensifies across the artificial intelligence industry. The company announced major price cuts for its Luna and Terra models while also introducing a faster mode for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model. CEO Sam Altman confirmed the changes on X.

New Pricing Structure

The most significant reduction applies to the GPT-5.6 Luna model, which now costs $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens following an 80 percent price cut.

Meanwhile, the GPT-5.6 Terra model received a 20 percent price reduction, lowering its cost to $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens.

The new pricing places OpenAI below Kimi K3, a Chinese open-weight AI model known for offering advanced capabilities at lower costs. Kimi K3 currently charges $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, making OpenAI’s latest pricing directly competitive.

Performance Upgrades

Alongside the price reductions, OpenAI introduced a new “Fast” mode for GPT-5.6 Sol. The feature delivers up to 2.5 times the standard processing speed while maintaining the model’s intelligence.

The faster mode costs twice as much as the standard version and is intended for enterprise customers that require lower response times for time-sensitive workloads.

Growing Competition in AI

The announcement comes as businesses continue evaluating the cost of deploying large-scale AI systems. Companies including Uber and Walmart have increased scrutiny of AI spending, while lower-cost open-weight models continue gaining traction across the industry.

By reducing prices and expanding performance options, OpenAI is offering customers additional flexibility as organizations compare cloud-based AI services with downloadable models that can run on private infrastructure.

Increasing Pressure Across the AI Market

The latest pricing changes also increase competitive pressure on Google and Anthropic, both of which continue expanding their AI model portfolios. Meta and xAI have also introduced lower-cost alternatives, increasing competition as AI providers focus on balancing performance with affordability for enterprise customers.
