Netflix Launches India Storytelling Initiative for AVGC Talent

Netflix has launched the India Storytelling Initiative, a new training program aimed at developing talent in India’s rapidly growing Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector. The initiative is designed to build a pipeline of skilled creators while reinforcing the company’s long-term investment in the Indian entertainment industry.

The streaming giant is collaborating with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to facilitate this talent development. This effort aims to bolster the local entertainment ecosystem as the company deepens its long-term investment in the country.

Expanding Production and Accessibility

The initiative arrives after a decade of operations in India, during which the platform has produced more than 200 originals and filmed in over 100 locations.

Beyond general creative training, the partnership with the National Film Development Corporation will focus on accessibility roles. This includes specialized training for audio description writers and voice professionals to improve the inclusivity of Indian films and series.

India’s AVGC sector has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing creative industries, with increasing demand for skilled professionals across animation, visual effects, gaming, and digital storytelling. Through this initiative, Netflix aims to contribute to the development of talent that can support the industry’s continued growth.

Strategic Focus on the Indian Market

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, currently visiting India, emphasized that the country is essential to the company’s global strategy. “India is one of our most important creative markets,” Sarandos said while highlighting the country’s growing role in Netflix’s long-term plans.

With an estimated 20 to 25 million paid subscribers in the region, the platform views India as a critical growth market driven by rising smartphone adoption and affordable internet access.

Sarandos also noted that the company has moved beyond its initial focus on premium scripted content to include reality and unscripted programming, such as “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” to cater to a diverse audience.

Technology and Future Roadmap

Alongside investing in creative talent, the company is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into its production workflows, including pre-visualization, production planning, and post-production.

Sarandos described AI as a transformative tool that could lower the costs of advanced filmmaking techniques like digital de-ageing, making them more accessible to creators.

Regarding live content, the platform intends to focus on selective live events rather than bidding for major sports rights like the Indian Premier League. While the company is considering an advertising-supported subscription plan for India, it confirmed that such a rollout is not yet ready.

The India Storytelling Initiative reflects Netflix’s broader strategy of strengthening local content production while investing in the next generation of creative professionals. As competition among streaming platforms continues to grow, the initiative is expected to support India’s expanding entertainment ecosystem while creating opportunities for emerging creators.
