Natural Secures $30M to Build Payment Infrastructure for AI

Natural, a startup focused on financial technology for autonomous systems, has secured $30 million in Series A funding. The company intends to use this capital to develop infrastructure specifically designed to facilitate payments initiated by AI agents, a task that current financial systems struggle to support.

By building a new architectural layer for digital commerce, the startup aims to address the limitations of traditional banking rails that were originally constructed for human-led transactions.

Addressing Financial Limitations for Autonomous AI Agents

Modern AI agents are increasingly capable of performing complex operations such as vendor selection, price comparison, and logistics coordination. However, these agents currently face a bottleneck when it comes to the final step of a transaction because existing payment systems like credit cards and ACH require human authorization.

This reliance on manual intervention prevents agents from operating with full autonomy, as they cannot independently finalize payments or manage funds without human oversight.

Natural positions itself as an orchestration layer that enables AI agents to store, move, and manage money. The company is designing its infrastructure to support both traditional bank payments and stablecoins, allowing for more fluid interactions between agents, businesses, and consumers.

By enabling these transactions to occur at computer speed, the startup hopes to accommodate a significantly higher volume of financial activity than what is currently possible through human-initiated processes.

Market Competition and Strategic Development

The funding round was led by Forerunner, a venture capital firm with a focus on commerce and consumer experiences, bringing the startup’s total capital raised to $40 million. This investment supports the company’s goal of challenging established financial giants, including Stripe, which is also working on payment solutions for the AI sector.

Natural has recruited staff with experience from major fintech firms such as Square, Ramp, and Stripe to assist in building its proprietary financial backbone.

Beyond simple payment processing, the startup is exploring ways to handle more complex financial operations, such as managing disputed transactions. While the market for agent-based payments is becoming increasingly competitive with other startups like Skyfire Systems entering the space, Natural believes its architectural decisions will provide a competitive advantage.

The company is currently transitioning from a beta trial phase to a broader deployment of its technology.

Founding Team and Industry Vision

The company was established in 2025 by a team including Kahlil Lalji, Eric Wang, and Walt Leung. Lalji and Wang previously co-founded Ivella, a financial product for couples that was acquired by Earnin in 2023.

Drawing on his background in banking and engineering, Lalji identified the lack of suitable infrastructure for agentic commerce as a significant gap in the market, ultimately leading him to pursue this venture despite his previous experiences in the financial sector.

The development of this infrastructure represents a shift toward a future where autonomous agents serve as the primary drivers of commercial transactions. By creating a system that allows agents to transact with one another and with humans seamlessly, Natural is attempting to redefine the underlying mechanics of digital payments.

The success of this initiative could determine how effectively AI agents integrate into the global economy as they move from task execution to full financial participation.

This funding marks a significant step for Natural as it attempts to build the necessary foundation for a new era of commerce. By focusing on the structural requirements of autonomous agents, the company seeks to establish itself as a critical player in the future of financial technology.
