Databricks announced a new funding round led by Coatue that brings the company’s total valuation to $188 billion. While the firm has not yet received the capital, the transaction is expected to finalize later this summer.
Databricks Valuation and Fundraising History
This latest valuation marks a significant increase from previous funding milestones. In February, the company closed a $5 billion Series L round at a $134 billion valuation.
Prior to that, it raised $1 billion in September 2025 at a $100 billion valuation, following a $10 billion round in December 2024 that valued the firm at $62 billion.
Although the company did not disclose the specific amount raised in this most recent round, reports suggest it is approximately $3 billion.
The decision to announce the valuation before the capital is in hand is unusual, but the company moved forward due to high demand from investors.
Strategic Pivot to AI Infrastructure
Founded in 2013, Databricks originally built its reputation on big data software that enabled enterprises to store and analyze large volumes of data in the cloud.
The firm has since shifted its focus toward artificial intelligence, developing tools designed for enterprise security and governance.
The company has introduced several products to support this transition, including:
- Lakebase, a database built for AI agents.
- Unity, an AI gateway.
- Omnigent, a meta-harness designed to manage multiple AI agents.
Cost Management and Open-Weight Model Adoption
Databricks has gained recognition for its use of open-weight models to control costs.
The company recently highlighted the performance of Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 model, noting that it can handle complex coding tasks at a lower cost than proprietary alternatives from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Internal benchmarking conducted by the company also emphasized the importance of the harness used to manage AI agents.
The firm found that the choice of tool, such as the open-source harness Pi, significantly impacts the cost and quality of AI-driven coding tasks. This focus on model and harness selection reflects the company’s broader effort to provide cost-effective AI solutions for enterprise engineers.
Significance of the Databricks AI Transition
The successful pivot from a big data provider to an AI-focused enterprise platform has allowed Databricks to maintain high valuations during a period of intense industry interest in artificial intelligence.
By integrating AI capabilities into existing enterprise data workflows, the company has positioned itself to meet the demand for secure and governed AI tools.
This funding round underscores the continued investor confidence in the company’s ability to scale its AI product suite within the enterprise market.
