Flipkart to Enter India Food Delivery Market via ONDC Integration

Flipkart is set to enter the Indian online food delivery sector, with plans to initiate a pilot program in the coming weeks. The company, owned by Walmart, intends to integrate this service into its existing platform as part of its participation in the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

Flipkart’s planned entry into food delivery marks a significant expansion of its digital commerce ecosystem beyond traditional e-commerce and quick commerce. The move comes as India’s online food delivery market continues to grow, driven by increasing smartphone penetration, digital payment adoption, and changing consumer preferences for on-demand services.

By leveraging its existing customer base and logistics infrastructure, Flipkart aims to strengthen user engagement while diversifying its service offerings.

ONDC’s open network provides Flipkart with access to an interoperable digital commerce ecosystem instead of a conventional marketplace model. This approach is intended to increase visibility for restaurants, expand consumer choice, encourage competition, and reduce dependence on a limited number of dominant platforms.

Flipkart Food Delivery Launch and Operational Strategy

Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy confirmed that the organization will debut its meal delivery service using a phased approach.

Similar to the rollout of its rapid commerce service, Flipkart Minutes, the company will begin with a small-scale launch before expanding its reach. This strategy is designed to monitor customer feedback and refine the service offering before scaling operations.

The new service will function as a hybrid application. While specific details regarding the branding or the initial launch city remain undisclosed, the company has stated that it will prioritize factors beyond pricing to differentiate itself. These focus areas include service reliability, restaurant selection, and overall customer experience.

Flipkart enters a highly competitive market where established players have spent years building extensive restaurant partnerships, delivery networks, and customer loyalty programs.

Swiggy and Zomato continue to dominate the sector through rapid delivery capabilities, subscription benefits, and diversified offerings such as grocery delivery and dining services.

Despite its experience in e-commerce logistics, food delivery presents unique operational challenges, including maintaining delivery speed, ensuring food quality during transit, managing peak-hour demand, and onboarding restaurants at scale.

Success will depend not only on competitive pricing but also on the company’s ability to deliver a consistently reliable customer experience while optimizing last-mile operations.

To establish a meaningful presence, Flipkart will need to differentiate itself through operational efficiency, service quality, and seamless integration with its broader e-commerce ecosystem.

Long-term Objectives and Market Positioning

The company aims to build an extensive database of restaurants over time. Krishnamurthy noted that the long-term objective is to ensure the Flipkart app provides users with access to a comprehensive catalogue of dining options. The firm intends to innovate across its value proposition before pursuing a pan-India expansion.

Flipkart’s entry into online food delivery could reshape competition within India’s rapidly evolving digital commerce landscape. By combining its established customer reach with ONDC’s open network and a phased rollout strategy, the company aims to build a differentiated food delivery platform focused on service quality and operational excellence.

The success of the pilot program will likely determine the pace of expansion and whether Flipkart can emerge as a credible challenger to the industry’s established leaders.
