Mumbai-based startup UrjanovaC is working to make carbon management commercially viable for heavy industries such as steel and cement. Founded in January 2023 by IIT Bombay professors Vikram Vishal and Arnab Dutta, the company has developed a modular system that captures carbon dioxide from factory flue gas and converts it into solid carbonate products.
The technology uses aqueous mineralisation to convert captured carbon dioxide into solid carbonate materials.
Because these minerals have industrial applications, the company aims to provide factories with a way to monetize their emissions rather than treating carbon capture as a pure cost. The system is designed to retrofit directly onto existing plants, avoiding the need for total infrastructure redesigns.
To keep operations economically viable, the system utilizes non-potable water, such as industrial wastewater or seawater, and relies on a recyclable catalyst.
In March 2024, the company announced that its technology is capable of pulling carbon dioxide from both ambient air and industrial flue gas. While the startup holds patents for its capture and mineralisation processes, it continues to focus on scaling its operations.
UrjanovaC has raised approximately $1 million in funding to support its development.
In April 2025, the firm was recognized as a winner of the Avaana Capital, Startup India, and NITI Aayog AIM Grand Challenge for Climate Tech Innovation. This selection placed the startup among three winners chosen from 557 applicants across 22 states.
The company is currently looking to secure commercial pilots and procurement partnerships. During the Bharat Innovates event in Nice, France, in June 2026, the team presented its progress to potential partners and regulators.
As of August 2026, the startup has not yet announced a commercial deployment or a signed contract with an industrial customer.
