Café Coffee Day, a Bengaluru-based coffeehouse chain, operates approximately 450 locations across India. Established in 1996 by V.G. Siddhartha, the company grew from a single outlet in Bangalore into a national brand that at its peak managed over 1,752 locations.

Café Coffee Day International Operations and Financial Status

The company previously maintained an international footprint, serving over 1.6 billion cups of coffee annually across six countries. Following a period of financial difficulty and the threat of bankruptcy, the organization discontinued its operations outside of India.

Company Overview

Vertical Integration and Supply Chain Infrastructure

Coffee Day Global Limited, the parent company of the chain, utilizes a vertically integrated business model to manage costs. This structure includes the ownership of 20,000 acres of coffee plantations in Chikkamagaluru.

Beyond cultivation, the company oversees the processing of arabica beans, the manufacturing of espresso machines, and the production of furniture for its retail outlets. The company exports its coffee production to markets including the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Founding and Growth of the Coffee Day Chain

V.G. Siddhartha opened the first Café Coffee Day outlet on July 11, 1996, on Brigade Road in Bangalore. The brand aimed to establish a coffee culture in a market where tea was the traditional preference, eventually adopting the slogan, “A lot can happen over coffee.”

By 2010, the company implemented a rebranding strategy that included updating its logo and redesigning store interiors to position the cafes as social hubs. The chain reached a milestone of 1,000 bistros by 2011 and expanded to over 2,000 locations by 2016.

Today, Café Coffee Day continues to focus on strengthening its operations in India by leveraging its vertically integrated business model and extensive coffee supply chain.

Despite scaling back from its peak and exiting international markets, the company remains one of India’s most recognized coffeehouse brands, serving millions of customers through its nationwide network of cafés.
