Apple Unveils M5 Ultra and M6 Chips With Focus on On-Device AI

Apple introduced two processors on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, built to power the newest Mac Mini and Mac Studio machines. The fresh components, named the M5 Ultra and the M6, focus heavily on handling demanding artificial intelligence workloads directly on user hardware.

The M5 Ultra functions as the brand new quad-die chip from Apple, created by combining two dual-die M5 Max components.

Apple calls this its most powerful chip ever. It includes up to 36 CPU cores, up to 80 GPU cores, and delivers 1.2 TB/s of unified memory bandwidth. This bandwidth is 50 percent higher than the M3 Ultra released in March 2025.

Focus on Professional and Everyday AI Compute

Professionals tackling heavy tasks like complex 3D rendering, visual effects, and frontier artificial intelligence models will likely utilize the M5 Ultra inside the Mac Studio. At the same time, the M6 processor targets everyday users and hobbyist developers.

Sri Santhanam, who serves as Apple vice president of Silicon Engineering, stated that the M6 relies on a 2 nm manufacturing process. This design brings a new CPU complex, two extra CPU and GPU cores, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine to improve energy efficiency.

The M6 features a 12-core CPU complex that adds two more cores than the M5. This setup provides up to four times faster AI performance compared with the previous-generation Mac mini, along with up to two times faster graphics, making prompt processing faster when running large language models on the device.

Local Development and Pricing

Apple highlighted that these silicon upgrades and developer frameworks allow creators to run and fine-tune large artificial intelligence models locally on their computers. Developer tools automatically spread performance tasks across the central processing unit, graphical processing unit, and Neural Engine. Creators can use Apple Foundation Models, App Intents, or their own proprietary models to build workloads entirely on the machine.

The newest Mac Mini models are currently available for preorder, with prices beginning at $899. Deliveries for these computers will begin shipping after September 22, 2026.
