OpenAI Launches Dots, AI Agents Powered by GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI introduced a new personal agentic assistant named Dots, powered by GPT-6 Astra. The company unveiled the technology during an event. OpenAI describes the offering as always-on agents built to handle various tasks.

Unlike Codex or ChatGPT, Dots are designed to operate independently of a specific hardware device or interface. They pursue user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal oversight. Users can name their primary dot and begin utilizing the tool. OpenAI envisions teams of these agents working together on behalf of users over time.

Availability and Platform Integration

Dots are available for Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets. Users can launch them from Codex or ChatGPT. The system allows people to message the agents through organizational platforms like Slack and Teams. Text message support is also planned for release.

The company outlined several use cases for the software. A software developer can deploy a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback and implement bug fixes or requested features. A scientist can employ a dot to rerun analysis and investigate unexpected results as experimental data becomes available.

Additionally, specialist dots can be provisioned with specific identities, credentials, and tools through existing systems.

Users can also establish rules around what Dots are permitted to do and require approval for sensitive actions, such as changing passwords, deleting data, or installing software.

OpenAI is working with Microsoft to integrate the tools into existing security frameworks, specifically Microsoft Agent 365 security controls. Much of this functionality was already possible through Codex and similar agentic harnesses. However, Dots bundle those features into a new package focused on independent agentic actions.

The branding gives Dots a bubbly, cartoon-like appearance, similar to Meta’s recently introduced Muse agent. The floating cartoons represent a visual update for OpenAI software.
