Spain and India Discuss UPI Integration for Tourist Payments

India is currently exploring a partnership with the Spanish digital payment platform Bizum to facilitate the use of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for Indian travelers visiting Spain.

This initiative follows recent discussions between Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Spanish leadership regarding the technical requirements for cross-border payment interoperability.

The move represents an effort to provide Indian tourists with a familiar digital payment method while abroad.

Technical Discussions for UPI and Bizum Interoperability

The proposed collaboration centers on enabling technical compatibility between India’s UPI infrastructure and the existing Bizum network in Spain. While both nations have agreed to advance these technical talks, the specific implementation details and a definitive timeline for the rollout have not yet been established.

This effort is part of a broader strategy by India to promote its digital public infrastructure in international markets.

Beyond the bilateral focus on Spain, India has also engaged in separate conversations regarding fintech cooperation and UPI integration with Estonia. These discussions highlight a consistent push to expand the global reach of Indian digital payment systems.

The government continues to seek international alliances that can support the extension of UPI services to new regions, building upon existing footprints in countries such as France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Qatar.

Benefits and Limitations of International UPI Usage

Integrating UPI into foreign markets aims to simplify small-value transactions for travelers, including payments at local shops, restaurants, and transportation services.

By utilizing a mobile-based, bank-to-bank transfer system, tourists may reduce their reliance on physical cash or the exclusive use of international credit and debit cards.

This convenience is a primary driver behind the push to expand the availability of UPI-enabled applications to participating businesses in partner nations.

Despite the potential for increased convenience, the utility of international UPI remains subject to several practical constraints. The success of the system depends on local merchant acceptance, regional payment app compatibility, and the establishment of specific local relationships.

Furthermore, travelers are advised to maintain traditional payment methods like credit cards for significant purchases, hotel deposits, or locations where UPI is not yet supported. Users should also remain informed about potential foreign exchange fees and transaction limits associated with cross-border digital payments.

Growth Trends in BHIM Payments App Transactions

The expansion of UPI internationally coincides with significant growth in domestic digital payment usage, as evidenced by the performance of the BHIM Payments App.

According to data from NPCI BHIM Services Limited, the platform experienced a substantial increase in monthly transaction volumes between June 2025 and May 2026.

Monthly transactions rose from 79.64 million to 244 million during this period, reflecting a growth rate exceeding 100 percent.

Financial data indicates that the platform processed transactions totaling INR 26,952 crore in May 2026 alone.

Regional data from Telangana shows a threefold increase in transaction volumes within the same timeframe, highlighting the widespread adoption of digital payments for everyday needs.

Analysis of merchant activity in the state reveals that grocery stores, food outlets, and quick commerce services are the primary sectors driving this upward trend in digital transaction frequency.

The ongoing efforts to integrate UPI in Spain underscore India’s commitment to scaling its digital payment infrastructure globally. While the project is still in the preliminary stages of technical negotiation, the potential for seamless cross-border transactions offers a clear path toward improving the travel experience for Indian visitors.
