Snapchat is refining its recommendation algorithms to prioritize authentic human creativity over automated content. Videos produced entirely using artificial intelligence will no longer be eligible for rewards through the platform’s Spotlight feature.
The updated policy reinforces Spotlight’s focus on genuine personal storytelling and original perspectives. It encourages creators to publish original human-created content while limiting rewards for videos generated entirely by artificial intelligence.
Balancing AI Tools and Human Creativity
The policy does not prohibit the use of artificial intelligence entirely. Creators can still use Snapchat’s built-in AI creative tools to edit, enhance, or refine their content.
The update comes as technology companies respond to growing concerns about low-quality AI-generated content, often referred to as “AI slop.” Snapchat had previously signaled this direction in April by indicating that users would see less AI-generated content on the platform.
Industry-Wide AI Policy Shifts
Several technology companies have recently introduced similar measures to improve transparency and quality around AI-generated content.
LinkedIn recently launched a reporting feature that allows users to flag posts they believe were created using artificial intelligence. Similarly, Substack has introduced tools to help readers identify AI-written newsletters.
Other platforms have also introduced significant policy changes. Meta recently removed an Instagram feature that allowed users to modify public photos with AI following widespread public criticism.
YouTube has also updated its monetization policies by clarifying that “inauthentic content,” including generic, repetitive, or template-based AI videos, cannot earn advertising revenue.
Recent Platform Safety Updates
Alongside its AI content policy, Snapchat has also introduced new safety measures for younger users. Last month, the company implemented new content control settings for users aged 13 to 15.
These users are now restricted to sharing Spotlight posts only with people they follow back. The update is intended to reduce privacy risks such as doxxing for younger users.
