Shopify introduced a site-building tool on October 1, 2026, known as Canvas. The platform lets merchants set up their Shopify stores through conversations with artificial intelligence.
Previously, Shopify provided a no-code builder that required editing a chosen theme by rearranging modular sections and blocks. Deeper customizations required editing code or employing a developer.
Merchants using Canvas interact directly with Shopify’s AI agent named Sidekick to construct their sites. As the artificial intelligence implements changes, the tool displays the results in real time. This functionality permits merchants to observe the overall store appearance taking shape or zoom in to examine specific details.
According to Shopify, this interface does not rely on a static preview. Instead, it renders the actual code behind the store.
Merchants can test full-page interactivity and animations, alongside viewing pages across various screen sizes. Sidekick also captures screenshots of the work to observe the identical view seen by the merchant during site updates.
Functionality and Integration
The debut of Canvas reflects a broader industry movement toward website construction that avoids direct coding. It aligns with other artificial intelligence-powered site-building offerings from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, as well as vibe coding platforms like Lovable and Replit.
Merchants retain the option to click individual elements for direct modifications.
However, the system relies primarily on users instructing Sidekick through chat commands.
Sidekick itself existed prior to this release, having previously written code, built applications, customized themes, and executed other edits.
Despite these capabilities, the technology had not previously been integrated into a comprehensive site-building product like Canvas. The new product lets users view an entire store simultaneously while zooming and panning across actual site files during updates.
To achieve this operation, Shopify granted Sidekick the capability to interact directly with theme files. The company also simplified the theme architecture, making store structure, logic, and design easier for Sidekick to interpret and modify.
Launch Limitations and Future Plans
Because the product is in its early stages, the initial launch excludes several features. Third-party theme support, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates are absent from the release. Additionally, Canvas operates exclusively on desktop.
Shopify plans to support these omitted capabilities over time as the product matures. The company aims to make online selling more accessible for individuals lacking budgets for developers and designers, or time to learn coding.
