Cursor Launches Origin to Expand Its Code Hosting Platform

The artificial intelligence startup Cursor has officially introduced a brand new code-hosting platform named Origin. This debut arrives while the company has officially become part of SpaceX, providing developers with an alternative environment to manage their codebases.

A New Alternative for Developers

Origin is designed to handle many of the standard tasks that developers typically rely on GitHub for.

Users can collaboratively work on codebases, browse and edit them, store them in repositories, and handle pull requests, which are edits submitted by others asking to be integrated into a main codebase. Until now, Cursor’s primary focus has been selling automated web development services through its AI Code Editor.

Looking ahead, Cursor has stated that agent-native features will soon become available for Origin, though specific details remain limited at this time. The company is also building a wider app ecosystem aimed at supporting broader coding efforts within the new platform. Origin is currently rolling out in early beta, with the initial release focused on repositories, pull requests, code browsing, and GitHub sync.

Interoperability and Timing

An interesting aspect of Origin is that utilizing the service does not require developers to stop using GitHub. The platform is built to allow users to work alongside GitHub and sync repositories between the two platforms.

According to Cursor’s blog, existing GitHub repositories can sit right alongside the ones hosted on Origin by connecting GitHub to Cursor, picking an organization, selecting a synced repository, and letting Cursor pull it in. For repositories that originate on GitHub, GitHub remains the source of truth, while Origin provides a synced copy for browsing, pull requests, and Cursor’s agent workflows.

The release of Origin coincides with ongoing frustration over performance problems affecting GitHub. On the exact same day that Cursor rolled out its new platform, GitHub experienced a major worldwide outage.

Functions across the site were degraded for several hours, accompanied by a nearly 20% error rate for web experiences and API traffic globally. The incident affected core services including API requests, GitHub Actions, pull requests, webhooks, authentication features, and GitHub Copilot.

Despite these challenges, Cursor faces substantial competition if it hopes to challenge the market leader. GitHub was founded in 2008, acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and remains the largest source-code host globally. Based on GitHub’s own metrics from October 2025, roughly 180 million developers use the service.
